Jennifer Lopez Rips The Runway In 'Jungle' Dress That Made Her A Fashion Icon In 2000
After the 2000 Grammy Awards, millions jumped online to see Jennifer Lopez in her Versace dress, making it one of the most popular Google searches at the time -- ultimately inspiring the creation of Google Images.
Almost 20 years later, Lopez, 50, donned a replica of the original gown to triumphantly close the Versace show at Milan Fashion Week on Friday night.
The actress, singer and businesswoman power-walked a circular catwalk as attendees cheered and snapped photos. The updated version of the silk chiffon dress kept the deep neckline, but was sleeveless with a billowing train.
During her runway appearance Lopez was joined by Donatalla Versace, who became head of the brand after her brother Gianni was murdered in 1997.
Before the reveal Donatella Versace's voice could be heard over a loudspeaker, commanding a Google search for "Versace jungle dress" as pictures of Lopez wearing the original outfit flashed across the ceiling.
Lopez's historic 2000 Grammys fashion moment coincided with her newly acquired A-list status. The Bronx-born artist was celebrating the critical and commercial reception to her debut album, On The 6, and a string of hit movies.
Her dress choice for the glittering music awards ceremony came down to the wire, according to Billboard.
“I was preparing for a last-minute fitting with [Lopez] in New York, driving down Fifth Avenue in a taxi, and I remember seeing that green dress in the window of the Versace boutique,” former stylist Andrea Lieberman told the publication.
When she tried it on, everyone knew it was the dress.
The dress landed Lopez on newspaper and magazine covers worldwide, and became "the most popular search query Google had ever seen", according to former Google CEO Eric Schmidt in a 2015 essay.
Since celebrating her 50th birthday in July, Lopez has completed a music tour, generated Oscar buzz for her role in new film Hustlers and is reportedly in talks to be the halftime show performer at the 2020 Super Bowl.
