Pet Owner Issues Warning About $5 Kmart Chew Toy After Dog Almost Dies

Leah Mabey wants fellow dog owners to know the dangers of the toy after her Pomeranian needed to have emergency surgery to save its life.

Posting to her Facebook page, the New Zealand woman explained part of the $5 toy became stuck in her dog's lower bowel.

"Last night our little Pomeranian had to have emergency surgery to remove part of this toy from his bowel as he had managed to chew off the end and swallow it," Leah wrote.

Leah added that while she is aware all dog toys usually break after time, she was concerned that a toy with a chewability rating of four was destroyed by her small Pomeranian.

"Now I know all toys at some level will get broken but I genuinely didn’t think a chewability level 4 toy wouldn’t be able to be eaten by a tiny Pom," she added.

Now I’m sitting here thinking about all the other dogs big or small that may have this at home and could potentially need surgery too.

The toy, while purchased by Leah in New Zealand, is also available in Kmart Australia stores as well as online.

According to their website, the toy is suitable for a dog that is 'feisty' and can be used for tug of war or a dog with 'medium chew'.

Leah went on to explain that her Pomeranian is a 10-month-old puppy with small teeth and like most dogs "will give anything a go but I thought I’d be safe buying him this".

The pet owner reiterated that she is sharing the post as a warning, making her page public so that fellow dog owners or individuals with concerns can share the post to get her experience and warning out.

"Please no hate or comments about being a 'bad pet owner', I’m not here for that. Simply writing a quick warning about this toy," she added.

My recommendation would be to chuck it away.

The post has since gone viral, attracting thousands of reactions, over 3000 comments and almost 2000 shares,

The Kmart Australia website warns to follow the usage instructions carefully and choose toys that reflect your pet's play style.
