MasterChef: Larissa Told Us Where Her Love Of Weird Flavour Combos Comes From

Larissa Takchi has never been afraid to pair ingredients with wildly different flavours during her time on 'Masterchef' this year.

Whether it's corn and curry leaves during an immunity challenge or serving up a parsnip-ice cream served with chocolate sauce, Larry is the mad scientist of 'MasterChef' 2019 and isn't afraid to give the judges' palates a little shock.

But her experiments began long before she entered the competition, with her taste for the unusual springing up pretty early in her childhood.

"I’ve always been a bit weird," Larissa told 10 daily over the phone.

"I remember when I was in pre-school, I used to love strawberries and capsicums so I used to tell mum, 'Can you make me a strawberry and capsicum salad every day?' at pre-school," she recalled.

"I used to be really weird, I’m a weirdo!" she added, which is probably a good thing because her ability to innovate with any old pile of ingredients in front of her has gotten her this far in the competition.

Her recent creation of a cucumber and ouzo tea served with crispy kataifi and a lemon crème fraîche sorbet won dish of the day, because she's perfected her knack of knowing the subtle flavours that work in harmony.

"I guess it's because I used to go out a lot as well, I used to be a food blogger so I’d go out in Sydney, eat at all the restaurants," Larry told 10 daily.

"So I’m always aware of all the trends, I’m never afraid to try anything," she said.

She added that she had a "really embarrassing story" about the weirdest dish she's ever tried, but then held back on telling us because it was apparently that disgusting?

"I won’t even tell you because it’s actually embarrassing but I will eat anything," she said.

Now we're going to be wondering for the rest of our days what on earth the meal could have been!

Someone else who's been a little puzzled about Larry's flavour combos has been her mum, who runs a restaurant herself, and has apparently been scratching her head at some of her daughter's recipes.

"Especially with that immunity challenge," Larissa said, of the time she challenged chef Adam D'Sylva to a mystery box that contained fresh corn, popcorn, Corn Flakes, blackberries and curry leaves.

"She’s like 'Corn and curry leaf? In a dessert? What, are you a psycho?'" Larissa said, imitating her mum's reaction to the challenge.

Although Larissa's identity in the kitchen is very much her own, she does credit one celebrity guest chef with helping her to refine her ideas, while at the same time never shying away from pushing culinary boundaries -- Heston Blumenthal.

"He just unexpectedly blew me away when he came on the show," Larissa told 10 daily.

"I don’t know what happened but he just inspired me. He’s someone that pushes the boundaries, there are no limits with food," she said.

Larry credits Heston with helping her have a breakthrough moment where "something just clicked" in her brain and she realised she "just had to go for it".

"I always loved food and I always had an interest in it but I never harnessed it as much as I did when he came in,' she said.
