Nicki Minaj Announces She Is Retiring From Music

In news that has come as a major shock to fans, rapper Nicki Minaj has revealed she will be retiring from music to start a family.

The 36-year-old, who is is engaged to music executive Kenneth Petty, revealed the news on Twitter on Friday morning, saying she has "decided to retire & have [a] family".

She added a message to fans, encouraging them to "keep reppin me, do it til da death of me, [x] in the box- cuz ain't nobody checkin me" -- a reference to her remix on Alicia Keys' hit "Girl on Fire."

The Trinidadian-born rapper, whose real name is Onika Tanya Maraj, had recently told listeners of her "Queen Radio" show that she and partner Kenneth Perry had applied for a marriage license and would be wed in "about 80 days".

“I’ll be married before my album comes out, but will have my wedding after the album comes out. Before the 90 days is over, yes, I will be married,” she said during the show.

Meanwhile, fans of the outspoken hip hop star -- known as 'Barbz' -- have expressed sadness and shock over the news, with fellow rappers also paying tribute to Minaj for her impact on the hip hop genre and for changing the landscape when it comes to female rappers.
